This recently opened airport is located 25km to the east of Bangkok, actually in the Samut Province. The name Suvarnabhumi meaning ‘the golden land’ was given by HM the King. The name written in English leads to mispronunciations. The correct pronunciation is su-wan-na-poomi.
The airport has one only large terminal to handle international and domestic flights. It is the second largest in the world with a size of 563,000sq.m.
Tourist attractions in the area include the Ancient City, the largest open-air museum in the world and Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo.
The adjacent Bangna is the venue of the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) and is an industrial and commercial area. The massive Season Square shopping mall is also located here.
Barely 40-minutes away is the most visited Pattaya Beach Resort.
The airport area is undergoing fast-paced developmental activities and much more is in the pipeline. A network of roads is being planned to connect it with other parts of Bangkok.
